5 Ways To Balance Life and Gymnastics

Being a gymnast is no easy feat. Sure, those high-flying stunts are difficult to pull of but so is balancing life and gymnastics. You have to juggle a lot of other things when you’re not training or competing: studies, family life, social life, and personal projects. Just thinking about it is kind of stressful, right?

If you think that you’re burned out or confused about this balancing act, read on.

  1. Plan and organize activities. Planning and organizing activities will help you manage your time better. Write down all important tasks and their due dates (training, homework, meets). Make sure that you have, at least, a general idea of how long it will take to complete each task so you can avoid procrastination (we’re all guilty!).
  2. Don’t ignore school. According to research, athletes have the potential to perform better in school than their peers who don’t participate in sports. Cool, right? Whether you like it or not, school is still an important part of your life. Athletic scholarships require good grades -- those hours of studying will eventually pay off!
  3. Say ‘no’ sometimes. It’s alright to politely refuse to do something if you know it’s not really a priority. You already have a lot on your plate and there’s only so much you can do in one day. Don’t try to do everything at once.
  4. Look for a gymnastics program that can help you manage life and gymnastics better. Search for a program that emphasizes the importance of gymnastics as well as having a life outside of it. (Really, do you really have to miss your own birthday for one training session?)The support you’ll get from coaches and peers will be valuable on the long run.
  5. Make the most out of your trainings. Training demands your undivided attention. Leave behind personal problems so that you can focus on polishing your routine and technique. Besides, your performance will only lag behind if you’re too distracted with your thoughts.
  6. Have a social life. Reserve a special time to enjoy hanging out with friends. It’s a great way to relax your body and mind.
  7. Invest time in personal growth. Perhaps you’re eager to delve into another field (Photography? Programming? Traveling?) besides gymnastics. Well, go ahead and do it! When you give yourself the time to explore other passions, you’ll have a deeper appreciation of gymnastics -- and vice-versa.
